Nutrient digestibility in Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) fed diets containing animal meals Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gugołek,A.; Zabockłi,W.; Kowalska,D.; Janiszewski,P.; Konstantynowicz,M.; Strychalski,J..
Three digestibility experiments on Arctic foxes were carried out. Control groups were fed standard diets (C1 and C2) composed of fresh or frozen animal by-products and steamed ground grain. Dry experimental diets (E1 and E2) contained animal meals, extracted meals and fat, were mixed with water prior to administration. In a preliminary experiment, the digestibility of dry diet E1 moistened with water for 15min and 24h was compared to determine the optimum moistening time during the experimental period proper. The preliminary experiment showed that moistening time had no significant effect on digestibility. In the main experiment, two independent digestibility trials were performed to compare the digestibility of diets fed to foxes during growth (C1 vs. E1)...

Auto Lopes, Levi; Cavalcante Lira, Rosa; Silva Camargo, Karine; Lima Santos, Elton.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the nutritional management of dogs and cats domiciled in the city of Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, based on the owners’ profile, by means of an applied questionnaire, obtaining information on the level of education related to the feeding offered to their animals, as well as the degree of knowledge about the importance of nutrition for the health of dogs and cats. According to the interviewees, in this municipality, the presence of dogs as pets was predominant compared to cats. However, most of the owners stated that they did not have knowledge about food and did not follow a correct nutritional management of the domiciled animals, despite having been instructed by professionals. We thus conclude that awareness must...

Occurrence and performance of Euschistus heros (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) on alternative host plants in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Medeiros,Lenice; Megier,Gabriela A.
The Neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros (F.) can reach high densities in some soybean areas in Brazil. Besides soybean, it also feeds on other plants, but little is known on the alternative hosts of E. heros in Rio Grande do Sul state. In this study, wild non-cultivated hosts of E. heros at Norwest of Rio Grande do Sul state were determined, and the E. heros performance was compared when fed on soybean and on wild hosts. Bugs were sought in plants located inside and on the edge of soybean fields during 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons. Adults were recorded feeding on seeds of Amaranthus retroflexus (Amaranthaceae), and on fruits of three Solanaceae, mainly Vassobia breviflora. Immature survivorship on soybean (86.7%) and on V. breviflora (81.8%)...

Ocupação espacial, alimentação e época reprodutiva de duas espécies de Corydoras Lacépède (Siluroidei, Callichthyidae) coexistentes no rio Alambari (Botucatu, São Paulo) Zoologia
Aranha,José Marcelo R.; Caramaschi,Érica P.; Caramaschi,Ulisses.
Patterns of spatial occupation, feeding, and reproductive period of two species, Corydoras aeneus and Corydoras gr. carlae (Siluroidei, Callichthyidae), coexistents in the Alambari River (Botucatu, São Paulo), were studied. High diet overlap, partial spatial segregation, and well differentiated reproductive strategies were verified. These findings do not permit to evidence the occurrence of competitive interactions between the analysed species.

Optimal Contracting for Cattle Feeding: An Assessment of Climatic Conditions AgEcon
Rahman, Shaikh Mahfuzur.
A unique approach using a biophysical growth model from the animal science literature is used to examine optimal contract cattle feeding behavior under alternative climatic conditions. The examination of incentives and outcomes in an unusually comprehensive contract parameter and behavioral space is made possible by combining simulated feedlot and carcass performance of a large set of cattle with public price and weather data. The model uniquely fits typical risk aversion levels and rationalizes existing contract types. The results show that optimal cattle feeding contract varies with climatic condition, but there is a tendency to replace cost-of-gain contracts with yardage-feed contracts as grid pricing has emerged.

Overlap of dietary niche and electivity of three shrimp species (Crustacea, Decapoda) in a tropical coastal lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) Zoologia
Albertoni,Edélti Faria; Palma-Silva,Cleber; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
Three species of shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817), F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) (Penaeidae) and Macrobrachium acanthurus (Wiegmann, 1836) (Palaemonidae) were sampled at the Imboassica lagoon (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), in order to estimate the overlap of dietary niches and electivity of their prey, through the analysis of the fauna associated with the macroalgae Chara and of the benthic fauna on the sediment. The overlap of dietary niches was estimated using five indexes. A total of 495 F. brasiliensis, 131 F. paulensis and 102 M. acanthurus stomachs were examined. The results of the different indexes of niche overlap exhibited the same general trend in the three species, indicating a high degree of homogeneity in the diet...
